Calling It Off: Causes of Divorce

Why do couples get divorced? To answer this question, it is important to analyze why people get married in the first place. Couples who have been dating and decided they were compatible do it as a validation of their love. Others get married simply because their society expects them to. For them it is a compromise.

Going by the traditional definition, marriage is a promise people make to themselves and their partners. Yet, when it comes to breaking this promise, it is often the everyday nitty-gritty that pushes them to the edge. Such a step is easier to imagine in a marriage that was entered into as a compromise in the first place. But instances of couples who very deeply in love ending their marriage over things like leaving the toilet seat uncovered, or the kitchen slab dirty is also very real in the face of low tolerance thresholds of people today.

Apart from these trivial issues that get blown out of proportion, a major cause of divorce is infidelity. A case in point is golfer Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren, who called it off after it was revealed that the sportsman had countless mistresses.

Another reason why couples break the bond is a mismatch of expectations. Most often, these couples do not communicate openly with each other, and hence find themselves married to a person they had least expected to be with. When reality seeps in, they don’t want to remain in a bad marriage. Low compatibility levels, financial issues and a sheer lack of fun and humour in a marriage may also drive couples to file for a divorce.

Even though the possibility of divorce has existed for a long time, their frequency has now reached a formidable level, with an approximate average of 50% of all marriages ending in a divorce. It seems that we are no longer afraid of growing old alone, or maybe we are too convinced of the possibility of finding the ‘right’ person even after having been through a divorce or two. Whether the reasons are psychological, emotional or financial, putting more effort into your marriage might still help you save it. After all, the most common reason for divorce is that we tend to give up too soon.
